RV tank sensors almost always read wrong because the probes are coated with waste residue, not because the sensors have failed. The buildup bridges the contacts electrically, so the monitor reports full even when the tank is empty. Cleaning the tank and probes restores accurate readings in most cases — replacing the sensors does not, because new probes coat over within weeks.
How RV tank sensors actually work
Most RV holding tanks use resistive probes: small metal contacts mounted through the tank wall at roughly one-third, two-thirds, and full. When liquid touches a probe, it completes a circuit and the monitor panel lights that level.
The flaw in this design is that the probe cannot distinguish between liquid and anything else conductive. A film of waste, toilet tissue, or mineral scale clinging to the probe completes the circuit exactly the same way water does. The sensor is working correctly and reporting what it detects. It has simply been given bad information.
How to tell if it is buildup or a failed sensor
Three checks separate the two, and you can do all of them yourself:
Does it read full immediately after a complete dump? That is buildup. A genuinely failed sensor tends to read empty or erratic, not stuck at full.
Do multiple levels read at once, out of sequence? One-third and full lit with two-thirds dark is a classic coating pattern.
Does a hard flush change the reading temporarily? If the reading improves for a day or two and then returns, the residue is still on the walls and re-coating the probes.
A truly failed sensor is uncommon. In nine years of RV service work, the overwhelming majority of tank sensor complaints turn out to be a cleaning problem.
Why replacing the sensors does not fix it
This is the expensive mistake, and plenty of shops will happily make it for you. Replacing external stick-on sensors or drilling in new probes puts clean contacts into a dirty tank. The tank walls are still coated. Within a few weeks the new probes are coated too, and you are back where you started, several hundred dollars lighter.
The order of operations matters: clean first, and only then decide whether any sensor is genuinely bad. Most of the time none of them are.
What actually removes the buildup
Consumer tank treatments are formulated to maintain a clean tank, not to strip a dirty one. Once deposits have hardened, you need agitation plus a professional-strength enzyme product. A professional cleaning combines mechanical action inside the tank with an enzyme treatment that digests the organic material, then flushes the loosened residue completely out of the system.
The result is visible the same day on your monitor panel, which is unusual — most RV repairs you have to take on faith.
How to keep it from coming back
Three habits prevent almost all recurrence:
Keep the black tank valve closed until it is at least two-thirds full. Dumping early lets liquid drain away and leaves solids behind. This single habit causes more sensor problems than anything else.
Use plenty of water. Under-flushing to save fresh water is a false economy that costs you a tank cleaning later.
Treat after every dump with an enzyme-based product rather than a masking deodorizer.
When to call a technician
If your sensors have been wrong for more than a season, if odor returns within a day of dumping, or if drainage has slowed, cleaning is overdue. If you have just bought a used RV, do it before your first trip — you have no idea how the previous owner treated the system.
